Batman's riddler

As keen-eyed Bat-fans pick apart as much as they can in recent "The Batman" trailers, one thing is clear: Matt Reeves is going dark and deadly with his interpretation of the Caped Crusader, and he's looking back to some bleak chapters of our own history to bring it life. While the last brave souls that have dared to don the cowl have been successful in their epic outings, Pattinson's story seems like it will be a more confined, street-level detective story with a few great villains at its core. Since 1943, Batman has had over a dozen major, starring appearances on the silver screen, from the original black-and-white serials all the way to 21st-century shared-universe blockbusters, and each one has a diehard fan-base willing to argue that their favorite is the best. Well, except for the serials. Looking back, we all pretty much agree those were terrible. The opening sequence of “The Tourist” bears a striking resemblance to “Duel,” the 1971 ABC TV movie starring Dennis Weaver as a businessman terrorized by a tanker truck chasing him through the Mojave Desert — and trying to kill him for reasons unknown. But that’s where the similarities end. A few minutes into “The Tourist,” a six-episode series premiering Thursday (March 3) on HBO Max, a British man (Jamie Dornan) engages in a high-speed game of cat-and-mouse with a trucker in the Australian Outback. The big rig runs his car off the road and nearly kills him, and he wakes up in a remote hospital with no idea who he is our how he got there.
